THE GENERAL ELECTION

QUESTION'OF POSTPONEMENT

POSITION STILL IN DOUBT. [BT TELEGIUI'H.— SPF-CIAI CORRESPONDENT.} Wellington', Saturday. The fact that Parliament has adjourned until August 26 lias raised the question as to whether the elections will take place at tho usual time at the end of November or early in December, or whether tho life of Parliament will be prolonged so as to obviate tho necessity of appealing to the electors on Dominion issues when the minds of the people aro occupied with larger considerations. A section of tho members of the House consider that any vote given at the polls under existing circumstances will not be a truo reflex of popular opinion, while, on tho other hand, Government members are of opinion that war or no war there is no necessity to cancel tho usual order oi things, and that public opinion will have settled down sufficiently by December to enable voters to vote intelligently on Dominion issues. Questioned on the subject the Prime Minister said that tiro Government hoc not given the matter tho slightest con sideration. When Mr. Massey moved tin i adjournment of the House on Friday night i he expressed the hope that on resumptior members would go on with ordinary busi 1 ness, and in Opposition circles this is in tcrpretcd as an intention to finish the or I dinary work of Parliament at as early ; date as possiblo to release members for thi election campaign.
