CONFIDENCE IN BRITAIN. DANISH SUPPLIES ASSURED. WHEAT AND FLOUR AFLOAT. (Received August 12, 9.40 p.m.) ■ ' ' '■•'■/■• London, August 12. Perfect calm- reigns throughout Britain. The fixing of maximum prices for foodstuffs is apparently unnecessary. Prices are practically normal, fish and fruit being ridiculously cheap. It is officially announced from Copenhagen that Denmark will continue to send to Britain 40,000 hogs weekly, together with 40,000cwt of butter. Wheat is firm, and there is fair inquiry both for arrived and near cargoes. Cargoes of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom total 2,220,000 quarters, for the Continent 1,715,000 quarters. Tho Atlantic shipments total 908,000 quarters, and Pacific nil. Tho total for Europe is 1,210,000 quarters. The Argentine is sending 5000. The Prussian supply is estimated at 100,000, the I)anubian at 25,000, the Indian at 100,000, and the Australian at nil. ■ .''* ■ v The Alberta Province has offered a full war supply of oats to the British Army, and British Columbia' is offering supplies of apples and canned salmon for British troops. The Government of South Africa has guaranteed the insurance of consignments of wheat from Australia. Tho citizens of Capetown have formed a committee to regulate the prices of foodstuffs. SUPPLIES FOR FRANCE. FUND OPENED IN PARIS. SAVING THE -HARVESTS. (Received August 12, 9.40 p.m.); Paris, August 12. The War Minister has detailed 20,000 naval conscripts to save the cereal and grape harvests. The Matin says that the French and American Bank has opened a gold credit of 30 million francs (£1,187,500), to the Government's account, for the purchase of corn and other foodstuffs. Tho newspaper adds that large quantities of grain in the United States and the Argentine have already been bought for shipment to France and Great Britain. •

CONDITIONS IN AMERICA. PRICES STEADILY RISING. MEAT STOCKS VEEY LOW. (Received August 12, 11.20 p.m.) New York, August 11. Prices of foodstuffs are steadily rising throughout the United States. Farmers and stockmen are holding in expectation of higher values. Congress will probably be to investigate the question of the existence of combines. ' Messrs. Armour and Company, the well-known packers, explain that the' rise in prices is partly due to the instability of tho import of meat from Australia, while American stocks are at present very low. QUEENSLAND LEGISLATION. Sydney, August 11. ; In the Queensland Assembly a' Bill has been introduced to enable the Government to secure meat supplies for the uso of the Imperial authorities. The Bill applies only to meat intended for export, whethor live stock or canned. Tho penalty for a breach of the Bill is a fine of £1000 or a year's imprisonment. GENERAL WAR NEWS.
