DOMINION'S RECORD.

INCREASING WAR CHEST. £20,000 IN 24 HOURS. [by TELEGRAPH— correspondent.] Wellington, Wednesday. Contributions to the Empire Defence Fund continue to pour in. Mr. Massey read a long list to the House to-night, and, at 9 p.m. announced that since the"rising of tie House yesterday £19,000 in cash had been received. This, with thp offers of h6rses and bicycles received, mado well over £20,000 received within the last 24 hours. That, he said, was a record worth mentioning, and it must be very satisfactory to all concerned. . DEVONPORT COLLECTION. MONEY SECURED AT WHARVES. A collection on behalf of .the Devon- ' port Patriotic Fund .was taken at Devon- ■ port vesterday, and resulted in the sum of £35 10s being obtained. The amounts obtained by the . various ladies engaged in collecting were as fol-1 lows:—Victoria Wharf: Miss E. Mason, £4 17s 9d; Miss M. Muson, £4 Is 4d; Miss Wheeler, £3 . IBs 2d; Miss D. Wheeler, £3 10s; Misses McLean, £3 Is 3d; Miss Manisty, £2 3s 6d; Miss Jackson, £2; Miss B. Grahame, £1 14s 43; Miss S. W. Wheeler, 10s 3d; total, £25 16s 7d. Stanley Bay Wharf: Misses Handley' and Gribbin, Mesdames Little, Frank Gribbin, and Turner, £9 13s sd. Grand total, £35 10s. The funds will be handed over to the Auckland Central Committee. THE MEN AT THE FORTS. APPEAL FOR FRESH FRUIT. An artilleryman writes:— letter from the Mayor of Auckland, with regard to the splendid effort being made by. the ladies of Devonport for the men in camp at the Auckland forts is rather misleading. The only donation so far received by the men of the Garrison Artillery, /Auckland, has been a donation of tobacco and cigarettes from the Devonport Orphans' Club on Monday last. Now, may wo point out that the men of the Garrison Artillery Territorials were the first to mobilise in New Zealand, turning out at midnight on Tuesday, August 4, to man the forte. The men have all had to sacrifice much, many losing all their salaries and some having to leavo their wives and families at a moment's notice. Since then the men have been working nigiit and day at the forts without any leave in an endeavour to be in readiness to protect the City of Auckland against any , possible invasion. The interest of the public has been aroused on behalf of the expeditionary forces, but the work! of tho Garrison Artillery seems to havo been practically ignored or forgotten. Tho men have not had any fresh fruit whatever since arrival in camp and very little vegetable other than potatoes. The only other vegetable they have had is 'onions, and very few of them. The expeditionary forces may co good service shortly, but the men of the Garrison Artillery are doing splendid service now, as is proved by the fact that the Defenco Department will not spare any of them to join tho expeditionary forces. It may bo in order to suggest that tho fruit merchants of Auckland might bo willing to donate a supply of fresh fruit for the three Auckland forte and thus show their personal appreciation of the work being doue in an activo manner. This letter should at least encourage tho ladies of Devonport to stick to their guns and not bo misled in their efforts by those who do not know the actual position."
