BRITAIN'S TRADE .RETURNS.

London, August 10.

The first instalment of the gift of wheat being sent by Canada arrived to-day.

The Colonial Secretary, Mr. Lewis Harcourt, in accepting the wheat, said the country did so with deep gratitude. It would N help in steadying prices and in relieving distress.

"We will not forget Canada's promptitude and generosity," said the Minister.

The House of Commons has passed a Bill through all its stages authorising the Board of Trade to seize foodstuffs unreasonably withheld from the markets.

British imports last month decreased in value £2,399,891; exports £2,758,828 and re-exports £485,427, as compared with the previous July.
