BRITISH EXPORTERS APPEAL TO DOMINIONS.

SEEKING ORDERS TO KEEP POPULATION EMPLOYED.

MANY CANCELLATIONS DURING PAST WEEK.

(Received August 11, 3.35 p.m.)

London, August 10.

The Association of Chambers of Commerce in Britain hare issued an appeal to the Overseas Dominions. They state that within the past week a very large number of orders for goods have been cancelled or reduced in volume, or delivery has been postponed. This, they Bay is possibly due to the temporary advance in the price of money or the uncertainty regarding war risks,.

The Government has provided against both, and, therefore, they, appeal to traders, not only to confirm orders, but to increase them* The Mother Country has a large mass of industrial population, and manufacturers are doing their best to keep them in employment. They cannot succeed if their customers suspend their orders or delay payment for goods already shipped.

The members of the association are satisfied that if their kinsmen overseas know the facts they will not overlook this practical means of assisting.

The Bank of England received £2,500,000 in gold to-day. Freights to Australia have advanced on the average 25 per cent.

Messrs. Dalgcty and Company, Limited, Auckland, advise having received, the following cable from their London .office, under dato of . Augsut 8; — Thompson's, Ismay's. and Shaw Savill Lines included in Government insurance scheme. War rate now quoted four guineas per cent,, contraband of war, excluded. , ' '
