PRACTICAL PATRIOTISM.

A GIFT OF £5000.

Donations towards the various patriotic funds which have been inaugurated throughout New Zealand continue to pour in. The response in the Southern towns and districts hits been most generous.

The directors of the Union .Steam Ship Company have voted £5000 to the Government's fund, and they have stated that they will give every assistance in regard to dispatching the expeditionary force.

Prospects indicate that the Masterton and Wairarapa districts alone will contribute £10,000 towards the purchase of horses for the expeditionary force. A total of £8000 has already been subscribed. It is anticipated that tho Wairarapa will be able to supply 500 horses, also fodder and full equipment of men free of charge. Great enthusiasm prevails in the country districts, and a splendid type of men is offering for activeservice.

Tho following donations have been made to the Dunedin fund National Insurance Company of New Zealand, £1000; Standard Insurance Company, £500; Messrs. Herbert Haynes and Company, £500; Dunedin Jockey Club, £500; Forbury Park Racing Club, £250.

The Ngatiporou tribe, through tho Hon. A. T. Ngata, has donated £200 and has offered 1000 carcases of mutton whonevor the East Coast Freezing Works resume, for the relief of distress in England.

Mr. Harold Beauchamp, chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand, has donated £100,

The Marton Jockey Club has donated £100 to the war fund and, if necessity arises, it will make a further donation later.

The Morrinsville Farmers' Union, in response to the request for the loan of waggons, has offered 25, and also decided to present the Defence Department with a new transport waggon and harness complete. In addition, a general fund is being raised, and the women of the district are enthusiastic.
