GOVERNOR AND BISHOP HELD AS HOSTAGES
TO DIE UNLESS THE FORTS CEASE ACTION,
LIEGE CIVILIANS SHOT FOR FIRING AT. ENEMY. (B«ceir«d August 10, 10.15 p.m.) Amsterdam, August 10. The Germans hold tho Governor of the province of Liege and the Bishop of Liego as hostages. They threaten to put them to death if
the forts continue to fire.
Refugees state that some inhabitants' of Liege were firing on the Germans from their windows, and that all were caught and instantly shot.
Some' railwayman and 25 others'arrested at Bernean were accused of firing on the Germans. They were driven at tho point of the bayonet into the firing line before tho forts.
• Three were killed. Tho rest fell and pretended to bo dead, and escaped at nightfall.
