TERRIFYING SPECTACLE OF ASSAULT ON MODERN FORT.

ATTACKERS PRESS OS TO MEET STORM OF BULLETS.

LURID SCENE LIT BY GLARE FROM SEARCHLIGHTS. (Received August 10, 8.30 p.m.)

Brussels, August 9. The six forts attacked around Liege on Thursday were Forts Barchon, Evegncs, Flcron, Chaud Fontaine, Einbourg, and Boncelles,

all east of the Mouse.

The principal attack was on the spaces between the forts, 13,000 men being hurled at one space protected by trenches and barbed wire entanglements.

It was a terrifying spectacle to see the creeping masses of men advancing under the blinding glare of the searchlights, those in front carrying nippers, the cupolas meanwhile belching forth shots, and tho machine guns on the parapets firing incessantly.

The Germans got through between Flcron and Evegnes and shelled the city, but all the forts remained intact.

At ten on Saturday night the general situation was further improved, the French Army advancing steadily.

An official announcement of the French capture of Uhlana. aroused tremendous enthusiasm.
