EARLY AGREEMENT SOUGHT,
GOVERNMENT'S EFFORTS.
GUN-RUNNING INQUIRY.

London*, August 9. It is understood that the Government will, during the fortnight's adjournment, endeavour to effect an agreement between the Irish parties. Failing an agreement, it will . propose to prorogue, reassembling on August 25, and obtain the Royal assent I to the Home Rule Bill, giving a pledge to introduce the amending Bill early next I session.
A Royal Commission to inquire into the gun-running at Howth, near Dublin,' and the shooting of civilians, has been opened. Mr. Harrel, assistant-police' commissioner, testified as to invoking the military aid. General Cuthbert gave evidence to the effect that he thought it his duty to comply with Mr. Harrel's request. lie approved all that the military had done that day.
The commission then adjourned
