REPRESENTATIVE MATCH.

AUCKLAND DEFEATS MANAWATU.

The Manawatu hockey representatives met, and were defeated by; tho Auckland representatives by 3 goals to 2 at Remuera yesterday aftornoon. The game was rather spiritless, and was not a good exhibition of hockey, although the visitors livened up con- . siderably difxng the latter stagoß.. The . sodden ground cut up badly early in vthe game, and mado scientific hockey "Quite impossible. The teams were:— Manawatu: Goalkeoper, Cousins; fallbacks! Nash, Korslake; halfbacks, Lo Com to. Cooksloy, Hancock; forwards, Paton, Little, Tucker, Fitt, Webb. Auckland: Goalkeeper, H. C. Cotton; fullbacks, H. B. Speight, captain, R. G. S'loman; halfbacks, A. C. Johns, L. G. Robinson, J. C. Rennie; forwards, D. Smythe, F. Moginio, B. A. Whittaker, J. Mahoney, N. R. Durham. Auckland won the toss, and played with the sun behind them, the local forwards being prominent in attack from tho opening bully. For tho first 16 or 20 minutes play was scarcoly out of the visitors' half, but indifferent shooting by tho looals and good defence by Cousins, the tourists' goalkeeper, kept tho score down. Whittaker, Smythe and Moginio were noticoablo for combined work, which several times carried the ball into the Manawatu circlo, and two good shots in rapid succession, by Moginie, wore well taken by Cousins. Players found much difficulty In keeping their feet on the slippory ground, while tho stick-v/ork was poor all round. Occasional attempts by Manawalu were repulsed by the local backs without much trouble. Johns and Robinson being particularly prominent. Whittaker - ultimately oponed the score for Auckland, and a little later Mahoney took a rebound from the goalkeeper and added a second goal. The locals were now running all over the visitors, but no further score was recorded before halftime, when the card read:— Auckland 2 Manawatu 0 Auckland played towards the worst end of the field upon resuming, and tho visiting players brightened up wonderfully, and took a larger share in the offensive tactics. Webb. Fitt and Tucker wore conspicuous in a more determined attempt to break through the opposing defence, but Johns and Speight checked. Smythe and Moginio opened up several runs .for Auckland, {lie right wing sending along some nice centres, which wero" not availed' of until Moginie, who had bad luck with some good . ; attempts, mannged to beat the goalkeeper, placing Auckland further in the lead. The : pace now brightened up considerably, and , i the Manawatu forwards broke away on a 1 number of aggressive runs, from one of which , an opportunity came to Webb, and this I player put a fine shot high into the net. Play. alternated un and down field, the ' shooting of the local forwards being wrotched, ' and ninny chances were missed. - Paton , added a second for the visitors, and al- ' though both sides played hard to add further points, no further goal was registered. The ' ball frequently stuck in tho mud and defied • all efforts to driro it into the net. The ' game onded:— < Auckland ;„ t , 3 Manawalu , „ 2 ... J Mr. R. H. Parton was referee.
