FOOTBALL.

THE RUGBY GAME.

With the "ALL blacks."

RECEPTION IN SYDNEY.

BENEFITS TO RUGBY. [FROM OTO OWN COMIF.SrON'DES'T.] i SrmrET, July 11, Well pleased with their send-off at Wellington, the Now Zealand Rugby team soon settled down on tho Mofcoia, which had ft fine and smooth run to Sydney. The passago, however, was ft slow one, Sydnoy Heads not boin.» reached until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, tho steamer .borthin? at 9 a.m. on 'Wednos day. Very few of the players suffered from sickness on tho voyage, but not & great deal of training was done owing to tho limited deck space. Graham was unfortunate enough to have his knee slightly hurt, and this prevented ais playing in the first match of the tcur. The team was officially welcomed at tho Rugby Union rooms at noon on Wednesday, a large crowd being present. Mr. J R. Henderson was in the chair, and among the speakers was Mr. H. Y. Braddon, a member of the Now Zealand Rugby team of 1881. Tha function was a very brief one, in order to permit of the team having an early afternoon praotice; Nearly two hours' solid work was done, the players appearing nono tho worse for their sea trip. Mossrs. Isaacs, R. Roberts, Graham, McNeeco, and Ryan, who will act as a Selection Committee during tho tour, selected the team for tho first match.

Practice was again indulged in on Thursday morning, and in the afternoon the party visited the stadium and witnessed a bright display of boxing. Tho local union officers look on the present tour as their bvst chance of reinstating tha Rugby game in popular favour. They consider that if they aro favoured with close contests and a fair attendance of the public they may bo able to give tho gamo the fillip it badly needs. So far as the local play is concerned, the standard is as high as it has ever been, and the officials are as keen and hardworking as it is possible for men to be. Finance is the matter that is troubling them most, for without a reasonable amount of revenue they will not be able to retain the grounds they now use, and the non-possession of playing 'areas easy of access may sound the death-knell of Rugby. Tho recent defeats of the local League players have caused a slight revival of interest in Rugby, and given attractive matches the public may to a certain extent go back to the. older game. The visiting players are keen to assist in that direction, and will do their utmost to make the play fast and attractive.
