Colonel E. Dewing, R.E. (retired), arrived at Wellington from London by the Arawa on Tuesday.
Colonel R. H. Collins, late AdjutantGeneral to the Forces, and Dr. T. H. A. .Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, were passengers by the lonic, which sailed from Wellington for London yesterday. .
Among the visitors to Auckland at present is Mrs. Nalder, of Nova Scotia, who is touring the Dominion in the interests of tho Rainabai mission for widows of India. Sho is accompanied by Mrs. BlairMason, of Dunedin, who is acting as local secretary. They are staying at Stonehurst.
Major D. H. Lusk, president of tho Auckland Farmers' Union, Mr. J. Btrauchon, late Under-Secretary for Lands, and Mr. Albert Bruce, of the Thames, who will constitute the commission to inquire into the conditions of land tenures In certain parts of the Auckland district, arrived from Wellington yesterday.
Commander Philip J. Stopford, R.N., who was in charge of H.M.S. Pioneer, and subsequently of H.M.S. Pyranius, in the New Zealand division, and who returned to England a few months ago, has been appointed to command H.M.S. Canopus, battleship, in the Third Fleet. The Canopus, which is one of the ships of tho Eighth Battle Squadron, is stationed ■ at Pembroke Dock.
Acting Sub-Lieutenant Anthony G. Cnnard, R.N., who was a midshipman on H.M.S. New Zealand, has been appointed to H.M.S. Argyll, attached to the Third Cruiser Squadron. The Right Honourable Vcre A. F. St. C. Fane, Lord Burghersh, who was a midshipman on H.M.S. New Zealand during her world's cruise last year, has been promoted to acting sublieutenant, and appointed to tho battlecruiser Lion.
Reference was made to the death of the late Mr. W. R. Bloomfiold at the annual meeting of the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association. In a letter to the association the late president, Mv. M. J. Ooyle, described Sir. Bloomfiold as tho " father of tho association." On tho motion of the chairman, Mr. H. B. Morton, a resolution of sympathy with the • relatives of the late Mr. Bloomfield was passed while the members stood in silence.
