KING COUNTRY NATIVE LANDS

URGENT NEED FOR SURVEYORS. r " ' [FROM OUR IB KCTTI COKRESI'O.VDEXT.] Kino Country residents are hoping for a forward movement in the raiding of native lands. The Act of 1912 decreed" that an inspection should be made of all blocks for which applications for .partition bad been lodged. The inspection must bo made by a Departmental surveyor, and a report submitted to the Court indicating the position in which roads should bo taken in order to ensure the roading and subdivision of the block on the best lines. This is a distinct improvement on tho old method of having the subdivision made by tho Court without special and ( reliable information as to the best method of partition. But meantime applications are being j.ang up awaiting the reports, which it is felt should bo more expeditiously supplied. As a vesult the settlement of the district is being seriously impeded. It is stated that a large number of applications are now in the Auckland office awaiting the reports which must be furnished, before the sanction of the Court can be obtained, and the applicants \ placed in a position to work lite land for which they have concluded negotiations with the owners.

A striking weakness in connection with the administration of native lands is the lack of surveyors attached to tho Native Lands Department. Some time ago an assurance was given that the Department would be equipped with its own staff of surveyors, and in view of the present necessities this appears to be the only manner in which a satisfactory solution of tho difficulty can be arrived at. Aft present a person who treats for a block of native land may be unable to obtain the signatures of all the owners, and after going to considerable expense and locking up his capital, he may be forced to wait many months before ho knows exactly what portion of the block is to be cut off. This alone.is a serious loss to the individual, while the consequent delay in development work affects both the individual and the community. <-
