CADET DRILL HALL.

A cheque for £493 14s was recently received by the City Council from Mr. George Elliot, being the £500 guaranteed by himself and other citizens, less £6 6s already received by the council, towards the purchase of .the Government court at the Exhibition for a cadet drill hall. .The Mayor, Mr. C. J. Parr, C.M.G., remarked at the council meoting last night' that for an expenditure of £600 the city was

acquiring a hall worth £1500 to £1600. Mr. R. T. Michaels, while explaining that ho had no objection to assisting the cadet

movement, considered that, the Government should find the land for the accommodation of the hall. He questioned, too, whether "the council was acting legally in contributing £500 towards tho purchase of the building. Further discussion followed, and a vote of thanks was passed to the guarantors.
