FRIENDS AND CHARACTERS.
Times and Sydney Sun Services. (Received July 1, 5.5 p.m.) London, June 30. A large number of unpublished letters of the late R. L. Stevenson, the property of his stepson, Mr. Lloyd Osbourne, will be sold at Sotheby's on July 24. Writing to his father in 1878, Stevenson said: "It is a strange world indeed, but there is a manifest God for those who care to look, for Him." He describes James Chalmers, the missionary, as tiie only hero he ever met. Stevenson states that Henley was the original John Silver, and, after detailing the names of others who served as prototypes for less reputable characters, remarks, "My friends come out rather . third best in ray literature."
