THE EARL OF WEMYSS. __ ! , NONAGENARIAN PEER. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received July 1. 10.35 p.m.) London, June 30. The death has occurred of the Earl of Wemyss in his 96th year. The family of the late Earl of Wemyss was one of the most ancient in Scotland. The late Lord Wemyss was the 10th Earl, but the family records go much farther back than the creation of the earldom. During his long life he played a considerable part in politics. Before succeeding to the title, he sat in the House of Commons for East Gloucestershire from 1841 to 1846, and for Haddingtonshire 1847-83, acting as Lord of the Treasury from 1852-55. The late Earl was long regarded as one of the wonders of the Peerage. Despite his great age he was a constant attendant and vigorous member of the House of Lords. Thoroughly up-to-date, he learn?*) to drive his own motor. The first Lady Wemyss, with whom he kept their golden wedding in 1893 (an event, which she survived for three years), died in 1896, but four years later, when 82, he married a niece of the late Lord Blackburn. His son and heir is Lord Eleho, himself over 150.
