WHANGAREI FISHERMAN FINED.

[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Whasgarei, Tuesday. On a recent occasion the Northern Steamship Company's steamer Paeroa narrowly escaped colliding in Whangarei Harbour with a launch, which was not carrying lights. 4 the result of inquiries made, a fisherman named Thomas Donovan was charged at tho Magistrate's Court to-day beforo Mr. E. Page, S.M., with $a breach of tho shipping regulations.

Captain Fleming, who appeared for the Marine Department, said that numerous complaints had been received tk-.l fishing launches were not in the habit oj carrying lights, and he asked that a substantial fine be inflicted as a warning. Mr. Page said that the offence was a serious one, and imposed a fine of £5 and £3 costs.
