AUSTRALIAN CRICKET.

TEAM FOR SOUTH AFRICA. ©

[fiiom OLE own correspondent. ]

Stdxkt, Juno 24. The names of tho players to be invited to represent Australia on tho South African tour at the end of the present year are:—-W. W. Armstrong (Victoria), captain, W. Bardsloy (IftS-W.), vice-captain, G. C. Campbell (S.A.), manager, C. G. Macartney (M.S.W.), E. P. Barbour (N S.W.), C. Kelleway (N.S.W.), T J. E. Andrews (N.S.W.I, G. R, Hazlitt S.W.), F. Baring (Victoria), J. Ryder (Victoria), W. Carkeek (Victoria!, ER. Mayno (S.A.), A, G. Moyea (S.A.), W. J. Whitty (8.A.).

Reviewing the selections, tie Daily Telegraph says:-" Trumper, Clem Hill. Hansford, and Massio unavailable, the sclectors probably mado as good a choice as waa possible- But a team without thoso men is hardly an Australian elevon. Not only would 'l'rumper have been a groat draw, but the evidence provided by his recent lour in f<ew Zealand is that, giving his whole attention to cricket, ho is as great a player as over. It is all very well to say that they cannot bowl> in New Zealand,- bat iho New Zealand bowling, plus the badness of the New Zealand wickets, is declared by M. A. Noble, who has faced the musio on those pitches, to just about make the New Zealand bowling equal to the average bowling tie batsmen is called upon to (ace in Australia. In Hill, a great 'draw-card* and a finoly-aggresiye batsmen has beon lost. Hill, however, is so tied down in business that it would surprise few people if he were not again seen in inter-State cricket other than matches played in South Australia /'Hansford, a wonderful outfield ard ft brilliant batsman, will ho sorely missed. But, of all the men standing down, Msssis'i withdrawal affects tho team perhaps mo3t of all. As it stands, it possesses, with (he exception of Whitty, and possibly Kollowiiy, no bowler of outstanding merit. There is not a fast bowler in tho sido, and though Androws can supply tho googly staff, it is probable that in South Africa, wharo the googly has been mado a hobby of, he will be more appreciated by opponents than by his comrades. That, however, is all that can be said against Andrews. He has only one or two superiors in the field, and his batting has for two years past demonstrated him to be entitled to a trial in the international field. Barbour is another man whose claims to inclusion in a louring team have long beon apparent. .Kelleway will probably bo found to be tho most useful bowler on the side. Provided all tho players chosen make the trip, the team has ample batting strength, without, of course, the attractiveness that the reputation of the three unavailable batamon would have given. Tho belief exists in well-informed quarters that two or three of the best of the men included in the team chosen will cot make the trip. If that turns out to be tho case, and the advice of J. W. H v T. Pouglas, who led the last M.C.C. team in South Africa can be aocopted. the Australians will be embarking upon a none too oasy sea. South Africa has some promising batsmen, and the bowling strength of Australia, without a Massie to supply tho fireworks, is like!? to bo severely tested."
