SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS.
Some scathing remarks were made by Dr. A. K. Newman, M.P., in tho course of bis recent political speech in Wellington, about tho foolish policy that bad obtained in that city in bygone years of lay-ing-out school play-grounds of inadequate area. He mentioned that, with tho Hon. Jas. Allen (Minister for Education), Mr. A. Leigh Hunt, and others, he had recently paid a visit to Hataitai, where a school is to be established, and had noted with satisfaction that tho Minister laid it down as essential that any site selected should be of sufficient area to provide a playground of amplo extent. In this con necnon, Dr. Newman also referred with gratification to the fact that the Terraco Gaol site, when diverted from its present purpose, would make an idea] school site with extensive grounds, and that the Mount Cook school playground was to bo augmented by the addition of a portion of j the adjoining reserve.
