ATHLETICS.

-3 SPORTS AT TAUMARUNUI. AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL. [BY TELEGUATH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Tattmaihjkxji, Tuesday. The annual sports meeting, which should have been held on St. Patrick's Day, was held on Saturday, under the pleasantest weather conditions. Th; athletic events were not as popular as they should have been, and another yea the association will probably drop then and concentrate upon the axemen's carnival. The start event in the axemm's classes was the open chop, and this attracted good competition. Peck, the Australian champion, and E. Pretty, the Waikato axeman, were amongst those competing. It says much for the handicapping that the leading men came so closely together, Sharp, the winner, being closely followed by Peck, who had half-a-minute handicap to overcome. The following are the results :—
