ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.
Sir,—l hope that the Orchestral Society will not be disheartened by the recent defections from its performing ranks, nor induced to sacrifice the quality of music performed, in favour of merely popular music. I have been a subscriber and listener for years, and would be exceedingly sorry if their concerts of high quality music ceased. Amongst the works of the great composers is abundance with sufficient melody t-o be appreciated and enjoyed bv persons only partly educated in. music like myself, and probably the majority of the audiences. To hear or see ••veil-composed music, or a well-written play, is a pleasure that lasts; while most of the " popular" music of the day tickles the ear, and, perhaps, gives pleasure for the moment, but is soon forgotten, or becomes tiresome if heard often.
