RAILWAY APPEAL BOARD.
CLASSIFICATIONS QUESTIONED. [BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] Dunedin, Friday. The Railway Appeal Board sat again today. George Andrews, senior clerk at Oamaru, appealed against being superseded on the classification list for 1913 by the promotion of members below him on the list for the previous year. Appellant conducted his own case and called no witnesses. One witness was called by the Department, and the board then terrupted the proceedings, and the president stated that the board was of opinion that the Department's action was justified. Hugh Mcllwraith Robertson, signalman at Timaru, asked to be rated and employed as first grade guard at lis 6d per day. The evidence showed that Robertson, when a first-grade guard, had been transferred to signalman. He had offered no objection, as his status and wage were the same as those of a first-grade guard. Recently, however, a difference had been [ made in favour of first-grade guards, whose wage had been advanced 6d per day. Appellant wanted to receive the increase of 6d, and to be placed on the same footing in the list as first-grade guards, so that, his opportunities for promotion would not be affected. A representative of the Department stated that appellant was untidy in his appearance and was not active on his feet. A large number of witnesses gave evidence that the appellant was not untidy in appearance and was a very efficient guard. Two witnesses called by the Department gave evidence in the opposite direction. Decision was reserved] Garner Hercules Mackley, stationmaster at Henot, appealed against being superseded on the classification list for promotion by W. J. P. Guinness, for the position of coaching foreman at Frankton Junction. Evidence as to the qualifications of appellant was given by Thos. Walter Brebner traffic manager, Invercargill, who said he would recommend appellant for the position of coaching foreman at Invercargill if a vacancy occurred. Appellant had no knowledge of the work at Frankton Junction. Decision was reserved.
