IRON TRADES' DISPUTE. THE WAGES OF PAINTERS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received March 7, 12.5 n.m.) Sydney, March 5. A fresh development has tikcn mace in the iron trades' dispute. An appeal has been issued by the Laboar Council for financial assistance for 30,000 to 40,000 men, women, and children who will shortly need assistance. A meeting of the ironworkers to-day decided to hold a ballot as early as possible on the advisability of returning to work. There is every possibility that the next unionist strike will be by the painters. A special meeting takes place on Monday. A ballot on the question of ceasing work will forthwith be taken. Under a current award the painters get Is 4d an hour and signwriters Is 6d, but they want increases to Is 6d and Is 8d respectively.
