NO FURTHER CONTROVERSY. •Received March 6. 9.10 p.m.) London, March 6. A sum of £50,000 has already been received by Sir E. Shackleton towards his expedition. THE MAWSON EXPEDITION.

COAL IN THE FROZEN SOUTH.

By Telegraph— Association Copyright

Melbourne, March 6.

Speaking at a welcome homo here yesterday, Dr. Maw son said that the expedition had brought back several tons of rook and mineral specimens, 300 or 400 birdskins, and a number of mammals of tie seal type. He had also obtained indications that a large area of coal existed, but at present he could not estimate the commercial value of the new lands. They might have much, however, and it was only right that Australia should have the lands, as the Australian and British expeditions had accomplished practically all the work done there.

The speaker further stated that he made exclusive arrangements with London papers for his main narrative. He, however, supplied certain news to the Australian papers, and, as a result, his whole contract with London had been cancelled.

THE MACKELLAB ISLANDS.

Sydney, March 6.

The photographer of the expedition, Mr. Hurley, gives an interesting description of the Mackellar Islands, a group a few miles north of Dr. Mawson's main 1 ase. The group is a great breeding ground for seals, rare gulls, petrels, and penguins. It is estimated that 150,000 Adelie penguins were breeding in the group at the time of the visit.
