ATHANASIAN CREED.

"PALTERING WITH TRUTH."

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.

London, March 4. The Rev. W. Emery Barnes, professor of divinity, Cambridge, accuses the Upper House of the Canterbury Convocation with paltering with the truth in retaining the damnatory clauses of the Athanasian Creed. He protests against the House ordering the recitation of the revised translation once a year. This Mr. Barnes regards as an opportunity, which the Convocation does not dare to face, to admit thit the damnatory clauses contain a direct untruth, DR. AVERILL'S VIEWS. The Anglican Bishop of Auckland said last night that he did not know how much importance to attach to the above report. The question of the revision of the translation of the Athanasian Creed was, he added, one that had for some considerable time agitated a section of the clergy of the Anglican Church, though that'agitation had not as yet taken practical shape. A great many people believed that the Athanasian Creed was one that was hardly required for public, use. all that is needed being, in their opinion, contained in the other creeds, particularly the Apostles' Creed. There were, again, some people who believed there should be a new translation of the Creed, and that some of the words in the present translation were not in accordance with the real meaning of the original. He confessed that he himself did not like the damnatory clauses of the Creed, and thought there was something to be said for the view that a new translation would do away with much of the present prejudice against the Athanasian Creed.
