AVONDALE ROAD BOARD.

CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. The fortnightly meeting of the Avondale Road Board was held on Wednesday. Mr. J. Tail presided, other members present being Messrs. G. Curd, D. B. Russell, J. Moray, and F. Hampshire. Among the correspondence dealt with was a letter received from Messrs. Calder and Goldwater, acting on behalf of a Mr. Roberts, making a claim for £6 13s for damages to a motor-car, alleged to be due to negligence on the part of the board's employees during the excavation work at present in progress in Blake Street. The board being in possession of statements that no obstruction was left by its workmen, it was unanimously resolved not to entertain the claim. The necessity for a protection rail on the side of the approaches to th% new traffic bridge over the railway was the subject of lengthy discussion, the bone of contention being contract yersus day labour for the work. It was finally resolved to leave the matter in the hands of Messrs. Tait and Morey. Complaint was received from one of the board's employees that differential rates of wages were being paid for the same class of work. As members of the board were apparently unaware of the reason of this, it was resolved to get a report from the foreman of works on the subject. A petition was received from a number >f ratepayers who urged that a footpath should he given them on Green Lane, between St. George's Road and Macukau Road. It was resolved that estimates of she cost be prepared by Messrs. Tait and Durd, and submitted to next meeting of she board.
