ROYAL ARTILLERY BAND.
SUNDAY CONCERT CHARGES. ' TROUBLE IN WELLINGTON. [BY telegraph.—own correspondent.] Wellington, Thursday. In connection with the proposal -of the Auckland Exhibition authorities to make a charge for admission to the Sunday concert to be given by the Royal Artillery Band in Wellington on Sunday week, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) has seqt the following telegram to the manager of the band's tour: —" Respectfully invite your band to refrain from charging for Sunday concerts in Wellington. Tour agreeing will cement the gojod relations existing between the band and the people of Wellington. I trust our esteemed kinsmen will not be the first to violate our present Sunday conditions."' To this telegram the following reply was received by the Mayor from Mr. Scott Colville (manager of the tour): "The owners of Athletic Park have , advised me that your council has granted permission to charge for Artillery Band's Sunday afternoon concert. A collection will be taken in the Town Hall on Sunday 'evening. The enormous expense of the tour; warrants the most careful financing and collections at both concerts would result in a loss." ' * .- Mr. Luke regards the reply as most unsatisfactory. and as evidence of his feeling in the matter has given the ' following notice of motion" That the resolution passed at the ordinary meeting .of • the Wellington City Council held on January 26, 1914, granting the Royal Artillery Band permission to make a charge of Is or 6d for admission to the band- performance to be given by them at the Athletic Park on Sunday,. February 8, be rescinded." . . The motion will, be considered'- at -: a special: meeting of the council' convened for Friday, February 6, at 4 p.m. ' '
