DEMANDS OF STOKERS.
VESSEL'S TRIP ABANDONED.
[bt telegraph.—press association.] Christchuech, Thursday. The waterside workers, having vacated the steamer Te Anau, which had been used by them as a house boat since the port was reopened some months ago, it was decided by the Union Company that the vesiiel should return to Wellington, where she was laid up prior to being brought to Lyttelton. When the crew to take the vessel back to Wellington was being signed on to-day, a stumbling-block was met with in the stokehold hands, who demanded the sum of £5 (and in some instances as much as £7) and their return fare to Lyttelton, for the trip to Wellington. These unreasonable demands were not entertained by the company, which offered the men 30s and their return fare for the run. As the men, who numbered 18, infused to make the trip except at the figures mentioned by them, the company has abandoned the idea of sending the Te Anau North, and, accordingly, she will remain tied up at Lyttelton, and her crew will be paid off.
