CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA. 1 \ .J'' ' * GALA DAY AT MERCER. - ■ SUCCESS OF WANGANUI CREW. ■». ■ *.rs :*; ■:,$ -i HADFIELD WINS • SCULLS. ' 1 ~ •' " • >■ - .-*■ - _ - i Weather conditions;at. to. early hour yes- i tor day did not appear too favourable for the - New Zealand championship regatta at Mer- j cer. The prospects, ' however, did not appear i to affect the' numbers or the enthusiasm of ' those who had determined to visit Mercer, 1 *nd the r morning excursion trains from J Auckland were fully laden. At.ten o'clock i visitors from outlying districts began -to 1 arrive by launch, and shortly afterwards the ■ * Auckland trains added their quota to the ] crowd gathering on the river . banks. By ' eleven o'clock the sun had burst through the' i obstructing clouds, and conditions were ideal. j for competitors and spectators ' alike. ' Launches, gaily decorated with flags, moved . ] to,and fro on the river,, canoes glided about j between the larger craft, „ and the rowing. < •kiffs, talking the water for the first event of tie day, presented a very -animated scene. Altogether, some six or seven thousand ■ people must have been present at the re- ' gatta. The .carnival proved most .successful' in every respect. The racing was good, and in the majority of cases the. events were gamely fought out to a finish. With the exception of three Wanganui clubs, no clubs outside the Auckland provincial district ; were represented." The Union Club, of Wanganui, was particularly fortunate in the New Zealand championship events, winning . no fewer than three out of the four contested. In' the champion pair * oars and ' champion fours the club was successful in defending its title. The title for the chanipion double I sculls, won last year, by Akaroa, again passed into the hands of the Union Club, who had held it for two years , previous to 1913. TKe ; championship single sculls' title was success- - fully defended by D. Hadfield, of the Waite- ; mata Club, who won it last year from C. E. Stone, of the St. George's l Club. The Union Club also obtained three second places and one third, gaining the greatest number of places"' of any competing clubs. > Waitemata' came , next in order of merit, with Wha-'" ngarei in third place. A feature' of the racing was the highly creditable per- , formance - put up by the Kawhia Club's ; heavy maiden crew, who, appearing for the ; first time at a regatta, and finished second', in a keenly-contested race, of 11 crews, rowing: in a creditable manner throughout. 3 Additional pleasure was • afforded during. the day by the selections played by the Auckland City Band, under the. Daton of Mr. Jas. : Impey. The many side-shows established about the grounds also proved a source " of amusement to many. The native aquatic events, without which no river regatta' is ever , complete, - were particularly diverting, the ' spectators appearing^. to ,derive no small amount of amusement from - the novel predicaments in whioh the ; competitors occasionally found themselves. .The members 'of. the committee had spared no labour in: their . efforts to make the regatta a success, and their energy was well rewarded. Great credit is due to the joint. secretaries 6f the Auckland" Bowing Association and Mercer Regatta Club, Messrs. H. Blamfield and A. C. Tribe; also to the other regatta officials. The whole of the events were .' despatched punctually to time, Mr. J. Maxwell acting capably-in' the position ■ 0f.,. starter. Messrs. ;J. Clark, president of the A.R.A., and H. A. Marriner acted in the ; responsible positions of judges, and Mr. G. H. Beston as umpire; Following are the results of the various events:— j Maiden Single Sculls.Wanganui Union (A.
