TAKAPUNA CKEY CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING

CUP WON BY TIRESOME.

RECORD ATTENDANCE..

The Takapuna Jockey Club inaugurated its summer meeting at Devonport yesterday under perfect weather conditions, and in the Presence of an attendance much in excess of that. of tho previous year, which stands out markedly as . a record for the North Shore grounds. The Takapuna meetings are deservedly popular with the general public, for the price of admission— shilling— tho return trip across the harbour in the ferry steamer. When the first race started the course bore a. bright and animated appearance, while the grandstand and long terraces were taxed to the utmost. Mr. R. Wynyard managed the gathering with his customary success, and from first to last everything passed off merrily, Mr. W. J. Ralph officiated as judge, and Mr. S. R. Speight as timekeeper, while the fields were sent on their way by Mr. C. O'Connor. On the track the going was hard, but the racing was of the interesting order. During; the running of the Calliope Handicap (for tuftj-year-olda), ! Delenda on a couple of occasions appeared to strike trouble, but eventually dead-heated with Chime. After the horses returned to scale, an inquiry was held, at the instigation of Mr. A. "W. Gordon, stipendiary steward, into the happenings to Delenda. Evidence ! having been heard, it was decided to caution ! Deeley (rider of Chime) and J. O'Shea (rider ! of Delenda).' The Auckland Garrison Band, ! under Conductor G. F. Cater, rendered a 1 "elect musical programme during the afternoon. .There was an abundance of money for! speculative purposes, for the goodly sum of j £28,745 was handled on the totalisator, compared with, £24,593 10s on the corresponding j day last year, an increase of £4151 10s.
