COAL MINE REGULATIONS.

A MANAGER PROSECUTED. [by teleqbaph.—own correspondent.] Whangarei, Tuesday. The sequel to a recent fatality at the Whangarei coal mine was a prosecution heard at tho Magistrate's Court to-day by Mr. E. Page, S.M., when the inspector of mines (Mr. B. Bennie) proceeded against Alfred Taylor, mine manager, under sections 40 and 41 of the Mines Act, 1908, on the grounds that the latter did not exhibit a copy of both the special and general rules in a conspicuous place in the mine.

Mr. Harrison appeared for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty.

It appeared that a copy of the rules, as required, had been posted at the dress-ing-shed, near the mouth of the shaft, but for the prosecution it was argued that that was not a conspicuous place within the meaning of the Act.

His Worship decided to visit the mine, and reserved judgment.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to a further charge of failing to post copies of the signals at tho mine, and judgment was likewise deferred until the other prosecution is dealt with.
