CAPTAIN OF WAKATERE.

HANDSOME PRESENTATIONS.

[BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORBESPONPBNT.

Thames, Tuesday. A very pleasing and popular ceremony took place in the Victoria Reserve last evening, when Captain Alexander Farquhar, on the occasion of his retirement from the command of the p.s. Wakatere, wa3 presented with an illuminated address.

The presentation was made by the Mayor (Mr. H. Lowe), who refererd in eulogistic terms to the genial, courteous, and obliging manner in which the captain had always carried out his duties during 45 years, as commander of the passenger steamer connecting Thames ' with Auckland. He had earned the respect and esteem of the whole community, both jast and present. • Captain Farquhar was also asked to accept a purse of sovereigns as a small token of esteem from his many old and tried friends. This had been subscribed by .Thames and Auckland friends combined. Tho Auckland quota, amounting to over £70, had been brought down by Mr. S. Hanna, secretary of the Auckland executive, and this, added to tho Thames contribution, made up a total of £200, which he waa pleased to hand over to his old and esteemed friend, together with the handsome address. •Mr. S. Hanna thanked the captain, on behalf of many Auckland friends, for tho numerous acts, of kindness shown to them during many years. Captain Farquhar thanked the speakers for their flattering remarks, and said that he had always tried to carry out hi» duties to the best of his ability. He did not feel that he deserved the high praise bestowed on him, as it was part of a captain's duty to study the comfort and- convenience of those travelling with him, so far as he was able. He thanked his old friends for the good feeling displayed towards himself, and regretted that his failing health had necessitated his resignation of the position he had held for so many years.

A social gathering was subsequently held at the Miners' Union Hall', where the captain and his friends spent an enjoyable evening. A number of musical items and recitations were given by Messrs. Hardman, Watson, Smith, Gallowav Honben, and Pratt. ' b
