CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT.

LECTURES FOR NURSES.

The Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board met last evening. Present: — Messrs. J. M. Mennie (in the chair), F. Dye. L. J. Bagnall, J. Rowe, P. J. Nerheny, S. J. Harbutt, M. J. Coyle, J. G. Rutherford, and W. Wallace.

The question of appointing a medical officer from the honorary staff to take charge of the children's department, was again before the board.

It was stated that Dr. Williams had been attending to children's complaints, and the chairman moved that he be appointed to the position. This, he said, would not mean that an extra surgeon was being appointed, and the work would be done without salary. Mr. Nerheny moved as an amendment, that the question bo again deferred, in order that a report might be drawn tip on the matter. He was of opinion that the board would not be in order in making the appointment at once. The amendment was carried. A statement of the receipts and expenditure for. the month of December was placed before the board. This showed the receipts to the hospital to have been £6495 9s 2d, and the'expenditure to have been £5655 lCfe fid. The bank' account showed that there was a debit'on the maintenance account of £10,889 9s 2d, and a credit on the loan account of 5 £8025 2s Bd, leaving a debit at the bank of £2863 ,2s Bd.

On the recommendation of the medical superintendent (Dr. Maguire) the following were appointed lecturers to nurses :— Mr. Casement Aickin to first year nurses (anatomy and physiology); Dr. Williams to second year nurses (medical nursing) ; Air. Robertson, to second year nurses (surgical nursing); Dr. Tewsley, to third year nurses (medical nursing); Dr. Pabst (ophthalmic nursing); Dr. Neil (eye, ear, and nose). A member of the resident staff 13 to be appointed to lecture on surgical nursing to third year nurses. Accounts amounting to £5476 14a 9d ( were passed for payment.
