ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

POWER FOR DEVONPORT.

WORK TO BE COMMENCED.

The scheme which has for its object ihe installation of a system of electric lighting for Devonport is now well advanced, and' it is anticipated that the necessary materials will shortly be ordered and an early start made towards the carrying out of the work.

The proposed power station will contain an efficient steam-driven plant, coupled direct to generators, for the supply of energy under the same conditions as those of the electrical department of the Auckland City Council. A pressure of 230 volts will be used for lighting, heating, and cooking purposes, but in the event of cases calling for greater power this will be increased to 460 volts. Although probably only 100 kilowatts will be required for the first 12 months, the power station is to be built of such dimensions that, as the demand increases, separate units may be added, making possible an increase of power up to 1000 kilowatts.

The actual site of the station has not yet been definitely fixed upon, but it is understood that it is to be placed in as central_ a position as possible, and in proximity to the waterfront, in order to economise in the matter of carrying fuel. % The principal difference between the city installation and that of Devonport will be that overhead reticulation work is to. be installed in the marine suburb, while underground mains are the case in the City of Auckland. Provisions have been made for the mains to cover a total length of approximately 10 miles. As the Devonport borough consipts of only 640 acres, it will be seen that by this arrangement electricity may be economically supplied to every house within the borough boundary.
