ETIQUETTE OF CONGRATULATION.

■» ■■■■- ■ \ As we all know, true etiquette u of the heart, and is not prompted by printed rules what to do or say on various occasions. First come birthday wishes, and I hope none of my readers will ever allow themselves to ignore the old custom of a few kindly words, and perhaps a simple gift. To the young and middle-aged the dear old words, " Many happy returns of the day," can always be uttered, and spoken in sincerity ( with a loving kiss or a warm handclasp. What further expression of goodwill is needed? In the case of our aged friends and relatives, we would alter our words, and would express the hope., that the year upon which they have entered will bo one of health and peace. It is not always an easy matter to write a birthday letter, and I think a suitable birthday card will just express our wishes. On receiving tidings of a wedding or of the engagement of young friends, sometimes a telegram will take the place of a letter, or a few congratulatory words over the telephone may be spoken, but neither should be done except in very exceptional | cases. It does not take five minutes to i write a few words expressing our pleasure I at the news.

Ladies do not write to tho bridegroom unless related, or are very intimate friends; they reserve their congratulations till they meet.

I would like to take this opportunity of making one little point perfectly clear. Wo frequently hear a bride congratulated. This looks as if we think she has been lucky in securing a husband. The man is to be congratulated but the girl can only bo offered good wishes. We may add, nevertheless, that she is sure to be happy with such a delightfully charming man.
