BOATING ACCIDENT.

A NARROW ESCAPE.

RESCUE BY NATIVE.

WOMEN AND CHILDREN BAVED.

On Boxing Day, at Kuaotunu, a party of four ladies end six children, under the charge of Mr. Joe Pona, a young Maori, had a very narrow escape from drowning. The boat struck a submerged rock when passing through a narrow channel, and capsized, and the occupants were all thrown into the water, which was about 12ft deep.

Mr. Pona, who is a first-class swimmeY, saved the lives of all, first, the children and then the women, swimming ashore with each a distance of over a chain. One lady suffered a good deal from the effects, having gone under water twice before being rescued, but she is now well again. The others, except that they received a few braises, were little the worse for their mishap. The children, aged from one to seven years, escaped without harm, thanks to the coolness and heroism of Mr. Pona, whose bravery is worthy of notice by the Royal Humane Society. The persons rescued were Mrs. Munro and four children, Mrs. Draffin end one child, Mrs. O'Connor and one child, and Mrs. Sutherland.
