HISTORIC FLAG.

RELIC OF MAORI WAR. PRESENTATION TO CITY. An interesting ceremony is to take place in the council chamber at the Town Hall this afternoon, when the historic flag captured by 'Major Jackson from the Maoris in 1863 will be formally presented to the city. The flag has been draped in a glassfronted case, 6ft 6in by 6ft 6in. The case is of handsome design. On the fop corners there is some fine Maori carving, while on ,U«, liciU&m, worn a, fera IwiC and &>& 'leaf respectively have been carved out in relief. On the top of the case is a large carved crown, beautifully gilded, the jtssxA* Wing pkWl v>\A in eoW. 'I'W flag is crown, beautifully gilded, Maori I tesuta Wing pttlwi mA in colour. 'i'W flag is draped and centred between a Maori I taiaha on the right, and a 17th Lancer's I lance on the left. \ I A brass plate on the case bears the following inscription :—" This flag, taken in. action at Paparata on December 13, 1863, by the late Major Jackson and his company of Forest Rangers, is presented by bis representatives and the Surviving members of his company on the SOth anniversary of the occasion, to the Maori and European people ol Auckland as an historic memento and token of friendship between the two races.'' The roll of Jackson's Forest Rangers on I December IS, 1865, is framed and placed I in the case.
