TWO MEN BURIED IN MINE.

KAKANGAHAKE FATALITY. ONE DEAD BEFORE RESCUED. COMPANION ESCAPES WITH BRUISES. SLIDE OF 14 TONS OF EARTH. [by. telegraph.— correspondent.] Waihi, Friday. A serious mining accident occurred at the Crown mine, Karangahake, last night. As a result, a miner named Alexander Woods was killed, while a fellow-miner, named F. Ritchie, was considerably bruised. At the time of tho accident, the men were standing on some quartz broken from a stope, when suddenly, and without warning, the timbers over a quartz pass immediately under foot gave way. Both were precipitated to the level below, together with a large quantity of quartz, estimated at about 14 tons. Woods was buried completely, and .though not killed instantly, as his comrade heard him speak, he died from suffocation before he could be rescued. Two miners working near at hand, R. Ryan and W. Olsen, strove desperately to unearth the unfortunate man in time to save bis life, but despite their most frantic efforts were unsuccessful.
