The New Zealand cricket team opened its Australian tour to-day at West Maitland, with a match against a strong team from the combined Northern Districts. Prior to the match the New Zealanders were accorded a civic reception. The weather, though overcast, was fine, and the wicket was in good order. Thevisitors had hardly recovered from the effects of their voyage, and had had little time for practice since landing, but nevertheless they gave a good account of themselves, and gained an easy victory, the match being confined to one day. Reese, the visitors' captain, won the toss, and sent the home team into the field. Snedden, by sound crickot compiled 123, and the two Canterbury men, Hickmott and Sandman, by good all-round play, contributed 80 and 61. respectively, to the total. Taylor, of Auckland, played a neat innings for 19 (not out), and 223 was on the board before the side was dismissed. The bowling of Sandman, Bennett, and Reese proved too much for the Northern, Districts' team, which could only compile 120, of which Fawcett was responsible for 69 (not out).
