INDIAN GRIEVANCES.
COMMISSION OF INQUIRY. HOLDING THE BALANCE. 24,000 RESUME WORK. ONLI A FEW ON STRIKE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received December 12, 6 p.m.) Capetown, December 12. Over 24,000 Indians have resumed work in Natal and Zululand. Only 781 men now remain on strike. The commission appointed to inquire into the grievances of Indians consists of Sir W. H. Solomon (Senior Transvaal Judge), Mr. Ewald Esselen (Legislative Councillor of the Transvaal), and Mr. James Wylie, a member of the Executive Council of Natal. It has a wide reference, and is empowered to suspend the sentences of passive resistors pending the investigations. Lord Crewo's reply to the recent Indian deputation is regarded as being, upon the whole, a statesmanlike attempt to hold a true balance. Imperial intervention is considered to be out of the question.
