THE EDUCATION BOARD.

TEACHERS' APPOINTMENTS. TECHNICAL SCHOOLS' CONTROL. The Auckland Education Board met last evening, and there were present Messrs. G. J. .Garland (in the chair), A. R. Harris, J. D. McKqnzic, C. T. Barriball, W. Auld, A. Burns, E. C. Banks, E. C. Purdie, and G. Edgecumbc. Tho following appointments were authorised :—Miss A. I. Litten, assistant, Whangarei school; Miss C. E. Barry, assistant, Romuera school; Miss M.. H. Pile, teacher, Toatoa school; Mr. G. H. A. Wills, relieving teacher, temporary charge of Dacre's and Tawharanui schools. It was decided to invite applications for the following positions:—Assistant at Normal School, qualified to teach botany, hygiene, ,and elementary science, the appointment to be regarded as a special appointment ; headmaster at Kaeo, Alexandra, and Puriri; assistant-masters at Te Papapa, and Newton East; female assistants at Maungawhau (2), Te Papapa, Nelson Street, Napier Street, Belmont (2), Uemuera. The following resignations were received: —Miss M. McCowan, assistant, Epsom; Mrs. M. Beggs, assistant, Richmond Road; Miss T. F. R. Kells, teacher, Lichfield; Mr. A. J. Cottrell, tutor, Training College; Mr. T. L. May, head teacher, Panmure j Miss C. Sutherland, teacher, Toatoa.

Thames Technical School. A letter was received from the Thames committee asking that the Thames Technical School be placed under a local board of control. Mr. Burns fas in favour of the proposal. Ho said it was too much to ask Mr. George George, the board's Technical Collego director, to carry out supervision of technical schools outside Auckland. He considered the granting of such requests would enhance the value of technical education in the outer districts. • Mr. Purdie remarked that the board would have to consider what jurisdiction it would have over technical schools which it allowed to be placed under local boards of control. The ' application was referred to the director for a report. The Arapao School.

The secretary of the Arapao School Committee (Mr. A. Pcttigrew) wrote stating'that, ho had receivod the board's intimation to the effect that the Arapae school. woidd be erected as soon as possible. ■ While expressing our appreciation of the board's practical help in this matter," said Mr. Pettigrew, " I may say that. this school is anxiously looked for'bv the settlers in this district." The clearing of the sit* was now well in hand. In reference to a controversy which took place sometime ago between Mr. C. K. Wilson, M.P., and tho Education Board, a resolution was passed by the committee instructing tho secretary to write offering an explanation. It had come to the committee's knowledge, that an unauthorised person had written to Mr. Wilson, alleging unnecessary delay on the part of the board. On further inquiry Mr. Wilson ascertained that ho had been misinformed, and wrote asking for full particulars. It was decided to send a copy of the letter to Mr. C K. Wilson.

New Departments. The tender of Messrs. Craig Bros., of Auckland, for £1889, was accepted for the erection of an infant-room (in brick) at the Maungawhnu school. The Maungaturoto Committee renewed its request for' the establishment of a manual training school in the district, and tho matter was referred to the technical director for a report.
