IMPERIAL DEFENCE.
NEW ZEALAND POLICY.
MR. L. MYERS'S OPINION.
/ ALTERATION OF FEELING.
By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright (Received December 11. 9.30 p.m.) London, December 11. The feeling in New Zealand with regard to the present naval policy, said Mr. Leo Myers, of Auckland, in a speech yesterday at the United Service Institution, is that it should be altered.
The Dominions, he declared, formerly looked to the Imperial Navy Tor protection. Now it was evident that the Imperial Navy was being taxed to its utmost in the defence of the North Sea and the Mediterranean, and Australia and New Zealand recognised that they must defend their own shores against any possible invasion.
Australia had extended the hand of fellowship in mutual defence, and in grasping that hand New Zealand was prepared to take a share to secure immunity from invasion.
The Overseas Dominions earnestly desired to have official representation on the Committee of Imperial Defence.
Admiral W. L. Henderson thought New Zealand should join with Australia in forming an Australasian squadron with proportional representation of New Zealand at Melbourne.
