THE GIFT AEROPLANE.
EXPERT AIRMAN REQUIRED.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Tuesday. Until the gift aeroplane which the New Zealand Forces are to receive arrives here nothing very much is being done to arrange tor its being used. It has not left England yet. The Minister for Defence (the Hon.' J. Allen) stated to-day that he did not know how far we should be able to fulfil requirements here. He had made a great many inquiries concerning aviation at Home, and had satisfied himself that to operate a machine required a good deal of expert knowledge. To attempt to operate one without this knowledge might involve the sacrifice of life, to say nothing of the loss of the machine. In view of this it was probable that the coming of the machine would involve some more expense, because we should have to appoint another officer, unless we had someone here to take charge of it. Ho added that at Farnborough men were not allowed to go up in a flying machine until they had studied air currents by going up in a* loose balloon.
