EDUCATIONAL REFORMS.
DESIRED BY TEACHERS.
[BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION."] Dunedin, Tuesday. The following resolution was passed by the Dunedin and Suburban Head Teachers' Association at its meeting last night, and it was resolved to send copies to the Minister for Education, members of Parliament, education boards, education institutes, and head teachers' associations :—
This association has learnt with great disappointment the statement of the Minister for Education that it was not his intention to introduce any legislation this session with regard to education. Also, it is with the greatest surprise that the association has learnt of the statement of the Minister that matters are going on satisfactorily in tin's Department. The urgent need for increased salary is evidenced by the difficulty under which every education board is labouring in filling vacancies with certificated teachers. The instability of teachers' salaries as based on average attendance, is continually in evidence. The impossibility under present conditions of bettering their positions after years of service is a deplorable discouragement to a large number of teachers. In this connection the payment of many teachers reminds one of the wages received in sweated industries. Schools are understaffed, and in largo schools especially the work of many teachers is burdensome owing to the large classes under their control. In the opinion of this association these and other matters in connection with our education system demand the immediate attention or . Parliament."
