QUINNAT SALMON.
STOCKING SOUTHERN RIVERS.
[BT TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Citristciu:rch, Tuesday. The chief inspector of sea fisheries (Mr. L. F. Ayson), who returned from the West Coast on Monday evening, informed a reporter that he had just conveyed a quantity of quinnat salmon eggs from the Waitaki to a temporary hatchery established by the Marine Department on one of the tributaries of the Hokitika River. He anticipated that quinnat salmon, which. have been established in the Wait aid for three years, will gradually spread to other East Coast rivers. The Department has decided to stock one of the West Coast rivers, and on Saturday Mr. Ayson will take over to Hokitika a further supply of eggs. While in Canterbury Mr. Ayson is obtaining suitable fish for the fresh water aquarium for the Auckland Exhibition. This evening ho left for Wellington,' taking with him seme fontinalis eggs, which are to be hatched at some North. island hatchery, and sent on to the Exhibition aquarium.
