HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
O- 1 ' WORK OF THE PAST YEAR. ABOUT thirty members attended last evening's meeting of the Auckland Horticultural Society, when the sixteenth annual report' and balance-sheet .were read and adopted. Mr. W- Handley occupied the chair, and in reading , the report stated' that all the receipts had increased with the exception of the moneys taken at the doors. This year the proceeds from the last-mentioned source were £17 less than last year. v
"It must not 'be forgotten, however,' says the report, " that only three shows were held this year as against four in 1911-12. the average attendance thus ; showing improvement. On the other hand, with the single exception of the prize-money, expenses have-, been very materially reduced. It was hoped that as a result of the year's workings some reduction might have been effected in the amount <of the overdraft, and this certainly would have been the case but for the unaccountable failure of th£. public to visit the Chrysanthemum Show. As it is, the amount over--, drawn last year has been increased by something less than the sum paid on the loan by way of interest. " Turning to the year to come, there are several matters which demand the serious consideration of the committee. As there seems little prospect of extinguishing the overdraft from ordinary 'revenue other measures will need to be taken. The amounts demanded for rent, and possibly also for prize money, are beyond what such a society is capable of providing, and it is imperative that one, if not both, should be reduced in amount. In the meantime no -effort should be spared to increase the number of subscribers;,' and this is a work in whioh every member can assist." ... . ......
The chairman further stressed the need for increasing the membership, and it was suggested that each of the members in the room should make an endeavour to obtain at least three new names on the roll by Jul V 11. .
