The Devonport Council.

: Keen interest is being manifested in the election for the Devonport Borough Council, and intending candidates are already making preparations to address the electors. Of these Messrs. Gannon, Considine, Allen, Cranch, and Quartley will not seek re-election, but there is already a large excess of this number of candidates in , the field. A business men's " ticket " has been selected by the Waitemata Chamber . of Commerce. The 41 ticket" includes Messrs. J. Henderson, H. S. Elliott, E. Patterson, and W. Moylan. The districts of Devonport, Northcote, and Birkenhead are entitled to, elect, a member to the Auckland Harbour Board. The sitting member is Mr. A.,Keyes, and other • candidates already in the field are Messrs. L. Gannon, E. Ford, and A. J. Walker. . , 1 Mount Albert Mayoralty. The Mayor of Mount Albert (Mr. M. J. Coyle) was approached by a large deputation yesterday morning with the request that he should allow himself to be nominated for a further term of office. The deputation was headed by the Hon. G. Fowlds, who acted as spokesman. ; Mr. Fowlds made appreciative remarks concerning the very thorough manner in which Mr. Coyle had carried out his duties in the past, both as chairman of the late Road Board and as Mayor of the present Borough Council. Mr. Fowlds also mentioned the many permanent improvements which had been made in the borough during the last two years. It was the hearty wish of all present, supported by public opinion, that Mr. Coyle would again consent to accept nomination. Mr. Coyle, in reply, stated that it would give him much pleasure to accede to the . request. Although the work had been "retry arduous at times, he felt fully repaid by the fact" that his services were so highly valued. He also acknowledged the whole-hearted support accorded him by all the members of the council, together with ! the town clerk and office staff. He would not, on this occasion, forecast the work of the coining year, but if re-elected he would then state his views regarding works in hand and to be undertaken. He wished, however, ,to state that he con-, sidered that the incoming council should take into serious consideration the advisability of procuring a road roller and 'metalcrushing plant, as he ,felt convinced that good roads could not be made without these.
