TYPHOID IN THE NORTH.

i THREE FRESH CASES FOUND. EPIDEMIC NOW IN HAND, [BT TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] Kaikohe, Thursday. The typhoid outbreak amongst the Maoris g in North Auckland is causing the settlers s some concern, although there appears e little fear of it spreading to any consider- - able extent. It is being confined to the '■- Kaikohe and Ohaeawai districts, in each & .of which isolation camps have been erected for the infected natives. These '• camps are on excellent sites with a good a water supply, and every car© is given the 8 patients. fc The Health Department's inspector, Mr. 8 Skynner,' is dealing in very prompt fc fashion with the outbreak, and any native ■ about whom there is the slightest sus--8 picion is immediately isolated. The Maoris are unfortunately , very reticent f about giving notification any disease in a their midst, and were this not the case t there would probably have been no ■ spreading of the disease, t Three new cases were discovered in the & Ohaeawai district to-day, but it is anticia pated that the epidemic will soon be stamped out. No more deaths have oor curred, although the case of one girl is - very serious, t ,On Monday last the natives at Ohaea--9 decided to hold a tangi over one of i their number who had died of the fever the previous day, and Mr. Skynner, hear- ; ing of this, immediately forbade the func- > tion being held, as he considered that such 9 a gathering would be very likely to spread • the disease. Many of the natives axe feelfc ing very sore over this. There is, howfc ever, every likelihood that the epidemic - will quickly disappear. •
