CROWN. £2942 FROM 1201 TONS.^) TOTAL TO DATE £847,644. The New Zealand Crown Mines Limited during the month of February crushed and treated 1201 tone of ore for a return of bullion valued at £2942. Compared with the return for the corresponding period of last year when 1870 tons yielded £3840, this shows a decrease of £898. The total output for the mine to date is £847,644, as set forth in the following table :— To end of 1907 ... ... £718,767 In 1908 (to fend of October, when _ operations were suspended) ... 24,465 In 1910 <May to November) 13,600 In 1911, 20,385 tons 44,808 Id 1912. 20,501 tons ... ... ,40,894 _ . £B^slß In January, 1913, 1157 tons 2,184 In February, 1913, 1201 tons ... ... 2,942 Total to date 847,644 OCCIDENTAL. 50LB. OF PICKED STONE. The manager of the Occidental Consolidated mine, Thame*, telegraphed yesterday to the local secretary (Mr. H. J. Lee} as follows :— Forty pounds of picked stone from top stopes, 101b from low level stopes, also'few pounds from south drive. Gold showing in top stope and drive"' i i. .inn . ,i. — ' i ■ ii ' NEW WAITAIA. The manager of the New Waitaia mine, Kuaotunu, report* that the No. 2 stope in the No, 1 Mock is producing good ore. The reef is 9in to 15in wide, and is showing good dabs of fine gold. The third stope is nearing the point where the reef was pinched from the drive up, and is now 4in to 6in wide. In the No. 2 block three stopes are in progress. The reef looks well in the various faceSj being more uniform than in the No. 1 block. 'The reef in the main drive going north is well defined, and should open out shortly as there is a strong flow of water. Severe bush fires have been raging all the week round the mine, but most of the cut timber and firewood was saved. The batteryis running smoothly, and one vat of tailings is under treatment. HANDSWORTH UNITED. In the Handsworth United mine, Kuaotunu, the fourth stope has been beaten along a total distance of 34ft without any change. The block at this end will be abandoned if the next stope does not im{>rove. The south stope is along 16ft, the end being still encased with hard flint. The manager states that it prospects very fairly, and would probably make specimen stone if once clear of the flinty formation which pinches it. The prospecting rise above the crosscut driven on the small lead is up 10ft, the formation is poorer in the back. A start has been made in rising from the low level north of the' main block, where fair prospects were obtained when driving the level. MOUNTAIN KING. The report of the manager of the Mountain King mine, Kuaotunu, states that the eastern crosscut was extended during the week to>a total distance of . 97Aft from the main level. .There is a slight change in the country, and a heavy flow of water is still issuing from the face. No. 7 stope north of the main rise was Carried along 10ft, the reef here is small. The Stopes above No. 4 level are still producing fair milling dirt. The average width of reef in the three stopes in progress during the week was 24in. No gold was seen in breaking down. The prospecting worknow in progress in the northern end of the property is progressing satisfactorily. A crosscut'has been started to intersect the lode. This .crosscut has now cut into about 10ft of quartz formation of heavily mineralised stone, carrying traces of cinnabar. An assay of 6ft of the foot-wall portion gave a good • result. Other sampling and developing works will be necessary to ascertain the true value of this lode. COROMANDEL WARDEN'S COURT. [by telegraph.— cohrbspondest.] CoeomanUei,, Wednesday. The monthly sitting of the Warden's Court was held yesterday, before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., when the following applications were heard :—-Tony Petrie, oromandel special quartz claim, 25 acres, refused, as it was not pegged out, and an order made for return of deposit; John Walter Callaway, prospecting license, 10 acres, Paul's Creek, granted for one year; Geo. Lindsay, Extended quartz claim, Tiki • Hill, no' appearance of applicant, struck out; Tony Petrie, Exalt special quartz claim, 16 acres, application adjourned for survey to April 8; Mark Parish and Walter Stimpson, protection for six months for an extended quartz claim, adjourned to April 8; Chas. Boswell, Day Dawn, special jouartz claim, five acres, objected to by T. Petrie, refused, with £2 2s costs to objector and 8s Court costs; W. F. Petrie, Ringleader special quartz claim, adjourned for survey, to April 8; A. E. Armstrong, Sea Beach claim, Golden Bay Special quart* claim, recommended; Royal Oak, special quartz claim, application for 14 days' protection absolute, recommended to the Minister for Mines for consent. NOTES. The winze on Tiernan's reef in the Breinrker's Freehold mine, Coromandel. is now down to 13ft. The manager states that the reef in the bottom of the winze is about 12in wide, and strong colours of goldNvere, seen in the stone at the last breaking down of the reef in the north end of the winze. The reef in the main face of the drive continues to look well, being up to 18in in width, and gold was seen freely in the quartz at each breaking down from the hangingwall portion of the reef. The manager of the Ross Goldfields reports that the sixth level of the Cassius drive is advanced 494 ft east. Progress for the past week has been slow, possibly due to sole-piece timber being used, which is necessary, owing to proximity of the old Ross workings. Dish prospecting in the ground passed through indicates no change in value. A watertight lock is being constructed in the seventh level, and a similar one will be built in the sixth fevel. A floodgate will also be erected in the drive which is being extended. The manager of the Tairua Mines, Puketui, reports that the rise on the PUnon reef has been extended a further 7ft. The reef at present is 2ft wide. The gtope north on the western reef has been advanced 6ft. The reef at this point is low-grade. On the Night reef south, > fair prospects have been recently obtained. The timber in this section is now being repaired, as otherwise working would be unsafe. The manager of the Silverstream mine, Maratoto, shipped two tons 16cwt of ore from the' Julia stopes to Sydney by the Maheno on Monday, and a further 4cwt has been broken down. The approximate value of the shipment is £122. A new penstock is now ha course of erection. Twenty-two tons of ore from the Waihi Extended mine was treated at the Waiotahi battery as a trial crushing. The result was as follows — Obtained from the plates loss 12dwt lOgr of bullion. The sands, estimated at 12 tons, assayed £2 13s lid per ton, and were sold to the Waiotahi Company for £13."
