MONEY IN DEMAND.

SETTLERS' LOANS CURTAILED. The tightness, of money has made itself felt recently in the Advance® to Settlers and Workers Deportment. The result has been that for the past few months it has been found necessary to curtail the amount advanced to applicants, and no advance in excess of £1500 is now being •made to settlers or over £300 to workers. This is due partly to the usual closing down of money prior to the close of the financial year, which ends on March 31, and also to the general shortness of money throughout the Government Departments, those of Lands and Pose and Telegraph being at present practically the only Departments with- money. Applications ior advances are still coming in as numerously as before from settlers .and workers, who are fully alive to the benefits to be derived from the scheme. The Government surplus money is given to them to aid them in developing the country, but, of course, when the Government lias not any money to spare the advances must naturally be curtailed.

For some 'lame the Advances to Settlers Department lias been working on money borrowed from the Port and Telegraph Department. Tho Prime Minister stated a few days ago, however, that the Advances to Settlers Department was to receive a portion of the now loan, so that a continuation of this course will be' obviated.
